1. Write a few sentences about the elderly corm-merchant.
Ans - The elderly corn-merchant was the chief character of the play "The pace for living". He was from a small Irish country town. He was not pleased with the life of modern age because it was too fast for him. The another reasons of his despair besides his dicky heart were his nephew who was cheating him and his wife who had the fantastic notion of spending £10 on a holiday. In short he was not happy with his life.

2. They tell me there's an aeroplane now that goes at 1,000 miles an hour. Now that's too fast" What light does the remark of the corn merchant throw on the fast life today ?
Ans - They tell me there's an aeroplane now that goes at 1,000 miles an hour. Now that's too fast". Here the elderly corn merchant tries to express that the modern life is too fast which exerts undue pressure on men women and children and desturbs the normal and natural rhythm of life and causes despair in life. 

3. What sort of excitement do we have today which our ancestors lacks ? Is it an advantage or a disadvantage ?
Ans - Today we are living in the age of science and our life is full of the gifts of science which was rare in past specially in the field of communication and transportation. The means of transportation and communication provide us the sort of excitement which our ancestors lacks. 

4. Who are taken to be slow thinkers ? How are the slow thinkers handicapped today ?
Ans - According to the author those who are cursed with l'esprit de l'escaliert; the people who light on the most devastating repartee about four hours after the party's over and those who get the lowest marks in any intelligence test, because those tests seem to be designed to measure the speed of the mind more than anything else. Today the slow thinkers are handicapped in the business of getting a living.

5. What enlightenment does the writer seek from his wife ? What does it suggest about the plight of the modern man ?
Ans - In the cinema the writer finds himself in a hopeless fog and after 2 or 3 minutes he has to turn to his wife for enlightenment regarding characters, scene, acts, dialogues etc.
For modern man it suggests that people have to think fast in order to keep their relevance intect in the fast-growing world. 

6. Summarise the central idea of this essay.

Ans- In 'The Pace for Living', R. C. Hutchinson captures the agony of modern man. He brings out how the fast movement of man, things and objects hurts the normal rhythm and exerts undue pressure on men women and children. Science and technology have made our life too fast which the author finds hard to follow. Thus the central idea of the essay 'The Pace for Living' is the agony of modern man due to the fast pace of life.
